You get a firm number before anything starts, and that number is what appears on the invoice. If we find a genuine surprise mid-job we stop and show you rather than adding it at the end.

The more useful thing is what we routinely tell people not to buy:

• A cleaning schedule you do not need. Under mature silver maple, twice a year. On a newer Greentown lot with nothing tall near the roof, once is genuinely enough.
• Guards as an ice-dam cure. Ice dams form because heat escapes through the roof and melts snow that refreezes at the cold eave. That is insulation and ventilation work. A guard neither causes nor cures it, and selling one as the fix is dishonest.
• Repairs into failed fascia. On the pre-war stock here the timber behind the gutter is often the actual failure. Re-hanging into it lasts a season. That is a joiner's job, not ours.
• Foam inserts. They hold water in the trough through an Indiana freeze and split more gutters than they have ever saved.
